It feels very consistent with Pokemon, nothing too outrageous with the story or characters. Its on the shorter side (10-12 hours for main campaign), has great music and a strong sort of samurai/Kenshi theming going on in the world.
One I would highly recommend trying to get your feet wet is Pokemon Bushido. There are also a lot of smaller games that were apart of fangame jams that sometimes tell different or unusual stories you don't usually see in Pokemon like one where you play as a pokemon beekeeper (literally called Pokemon Beekeeper) and harvest honey for profits or one where your cruise ship gets struck and you have to survive on an island (game is called Pokemon Castaway I believe) and another that takes place on a research space station (attack on the space station). Pokemon Xenoverse (big finished game) has by far the most impressive battle system I've seen since its straight gen V complete with animated pokemon in battle and regional (sort of) forms that seem like they could have come straight out of Gamefreak. Its rare that you have to actually think much in Pokemon outside of competitive but some of these fangames actually make you think about team composition abit more unless you want to rely on items to get you through.Ī lot of people swear by Insurgence but I haven't played a ton, I feel like it gets a lot of its rep for being one of the first big completed ones.

Still, its a great feeling to have actual meaningful gym/boss battles with a full six to face off against. Although I guess a lot of fangames are on the tougher side since generally hardcore fans tend to find pokemon games main campaign to be too mind numbingly easy these days. I really like Pokemon Reborn (50 hour main campaign with like 16 or 18 gyms is finished but postgame is still being worked on) a lot but its abit dark or edgy as some might say and tough as balls, which may not be everybody's cup of tea. What do you want out of Pokemon? That will influence the kind of answer I would give.
